FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do you become an architect?
In the United States you earn an accredited degree, record professional experience through the Architectural Experience Program and pass the Architect Registration Examination. Your state board then issues the licence. Our school and licensure guides cover each step.
How long does it take to become an architect?
Longer than the degree alone. School is only the first stage, and recorded experience and the exam add several years after it. Our guide to architecture school length sets out each route.
Do I need a master's degree to become an architect?
Not always. A five year Bachelor of Architecture is a professional degree on its own, while a four year pre-professional degree has to be followed by an accredited M.Arch. Our grad school guides explain the routes and the application.
How do I get an architecture internship with no experience?
Firms weigh your portfolio more than your resume, so lead with studio work, sketches and process. Our internship guides cover where to look and how to apply without office experience.
How much do architects earn?
Pay depends on location, experience and the type of firm. Our salary guides cover what a first job pays, why some roles have no single figure and how to negotiate an offer.
Can architects work freelance or remotely?
Yes, but not every task travels. Our guides on remote jobs and freelancing explain which work suits each and how freelancers set rates and find clients.
